This semester for my Collo project, I have chosen to read classic literature. I hope that this will help me to become more well-rounded and provide stress-relief through an activity I enjoy. Over the course of the past year and a half, I have compiled a classic literature reading bucket list for myself, so the books I have chosen come from this list.
The first book I read was Joseph Heller's satirical staple Catch-22, a war novel in which the main character, Yossarian, believes his superiors are conspiring to get him killed. The novel is full of nonsensical characters who accomplish nothing because of their counter-intuitive actions. I have not yet read many critical interpretations, but I am curious to know to what extent the misogynistic attitudes reflect Heller's beliefs and to what extent they are part of the satire. Reading the book took about 15 hours.
Next, I plan to read Toni Morrison's Beloved, followed by Jack Kerouac's On the Road and Jane Austen's Persuasion.
