This year I had the privilege of attending the ETSU Faculty Gala once again and was more amazed than ever by the magnanimous talents of the music faculty. Mrs. Karen Smith, esteemed voice instructor and opera workshop director, stole the night with a rare and incredible performance. Dr. Caton, a beloved, whimsical piano professor who at some point teaches nearly every music major, brought down the house with a rendition of the Tennessee Waltz. Dr. Yi-Yang Chen, who joined the faculty last year and quickly became popular with students, wowed everyone with a passionate virtuoso piano performance.

While music students attend the faculty gala with hopes of hearing our favorite professors perform, the gala can also be a great introduction to new faculty. This year, new instructors in voice, saxophone, percussion, and brass performed formally before ETSU students for the first time. Hearing their incredible talent and work brought new excitement to my musicianship.

The performance was 2 hours.
