Yesterday, I met with professor Scott Jenkinson and two other students to begin discussing a project that Mr. J had been thinking about for quite some time: a database that will connect ETSU students with volunteer organizations within the Tri-cities community. Mr. Jenkinson had asked students who he thought would be interested and well-suited to the job to help him in his endeavors, mostly by creating a series of interview questions to present to local non-profit organizations. The questions will be used to best determine the goals and ideologies of the organization, the types of volunteers who are best suited to the organization, and the average type of work done by volunteers within the organization, among other things. Myself and three other students will be generating the questions, making contact with the nonprofit organizations, and interviewing organization leaders in order to gain as much information as possible to include in the database.
Because finding the right volunteering outlet has been a struggle for me, I am excited to be a part of this pioneering effort to improve our campus and local communities while highlighting vocational exploration opportunities for ETSU students. The foundation has barely been laid, but Mr. J. hopes that after this semester InTOPform can expand its team to other students and those of us who are involved already can train them. This will allow us to connect with more nonprofit organizations, as well.
